Help Fight Cancer

June 9th, 2010

Do you know someone who has or is currently fighting cancer? Have you lost a loved one to cancer? You can help MidWest Financial fight cancer through the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Relay is a 24-hour community event that will be held at Washtenaw Community College Saturday, June 26, 10 AM, to Sunday, June 27, 10 AM.

So, how can you help? It’s simple and there are several options:

  1. Make a donation to MidWest Financial’s Team. You can make a donation at any Branch office. No amount is too small. You can also donate online via credit card on our Team website.
  2. Come out to the event. Registration is not required and there will be lots of family-friendly activities and fundraisers happening. Stay as long or as short as you like.
  3. If you are a Cancer Survivor (congratulations!), come out for the kick-off ceremony–with the first Relay lap lead by Survivors, followed by brunch (please register as a Survivor for planning purposes only).
  4. Purchase a Luminary to honor a Survivor or remember a loved one. These special tributes are decorated by the purchasers. At dusk they will line the path and be lit, just before a special tribute ceremony, and they remain lit for the entire night. Luminaries may be purchased at any Branch locations for just $10.
  5. Join the Team. We would love for you to walk with us–someone on our Team will be walking the track during the entire 24-hours. Time slots are typically assigned in 1-hour blocks. If you are interested in joining the Team, please visit our Team website.

Relay for Life is an awesome, inspirational, and effective way to remember our loved ones and fight back against cancer. Hope to see you there!

International Nurses Day

May 11th, 2010
A salute to our Nurses! International Nurses Day is Wednesday, May 12, and the staff at MidWest Financial thanks all of you for the job you do every day!

Nurses’ Day was first planned in 1953; however, it was not until 1974 that it was actually celebrated—after the International Council of Nurses publicly declared May 12 as International Nurse Day. Why May 12? It is the birth date of Florence Nightingale, the woman considered to be the founder of the modern nursing movement.

In the U.S., the American Nursing Association later designated May 6-12 as National Nurses Week. Over time, the celebration has expanded to honor all types of nursing occupations as well as nursing students.

Different organizations choose to recognize their hard-working nursing staffs and students in various ways. Here at MidWest Financial, we acknowledge your hard work and your contributions. To all of the nurses and future nurses out there, Thank You!

Celebrating Doctors’ Day

March 24th, 2010
doc_day_blog_banner As we celebrate Doctors’ Day on Tuesday, March 30, the staff at MidWest Financial thanks all Doctors for the job you do everyday!

Doctors’ Day, you ask? Yes! Officially proclaimed in 1991, its origins stretch back 77 years: The first Doctor’s Day was celebrated in Winder, Georgia, on March 30, 1933—the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery in 1842. It is the brain child of Eudora Brown Almond, who wanted a way to recognize the contributions of physicians who serve our country by caring for its citizens. Traditionally, it is a day to send greeting cards and lay flowers on the graves of physicians. And over the years the red carnation has been adopted as a symbol for the day, signifying the qualities of sacrifice, charity, courage, bravery, and love.

It is a day that is not yet widely celebrated here in Southeast Michigan, but one we at MidWest Financial recognize. So to all of the Doctors out there, Thank You!

Credit Unions Helping in Haiti

January 19th, 2010

The world aches for the people of Haiti. And while relief efforts are arriving from all corners of the globe, credit unions are already there.

In July 2009, the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) launched a three-year program to extend financial services to Haiti’s rural poor; it has similar programs in other countries like Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Kenya. Last Friday WOCCU received word that its staff in Haiti is all accounted for, uninjured, and ready to help—just as they helped with relief and rebuilding efforts during past international disasters, including the December 2004 Asian tsunami, the February 2006 Philippine islands landslide and earthquakes in Peru, El Salvador and Malawi.

MidWest Financial is also ready to help with a $500 donation to relief efforts. We encourage you to show your support for Haiti in whatever way you can. Donations can made directly to the American Red Cross (a $10 donation is as simple as texting “Haiti” to 90999) or one of the other many relief organizations.

We’re working with SOS Community Services in Ann Arbor to provide needed personal care and food items for its crisis center this Holiday season. Every item donated makes a difference for a local family. We know that budgets are tight; however, you, our members, have humbled us in past years with your generous hearts.

Donation boxes are available at the Briarwood Cir., Carpenter Rd., Green Rd., and Jackson Rd. branch locations through Saturday, Dec. 19. Every item donated will go to serve a Washtenaw family in crisis.
